Federal was kind enough to send me several hundred rounds of their CCI 40g segmented hollow point loads as well as their 40g match hollow point loads. I also had some Remington 36g round nose hollow points on hand, and I fed those through the 70PSS as well.

The little gun ran everything without a single malfunction. I shot standing, sitting, and from a bag, and I never experienced any issues. I also shot several rapid-fire sequences and failed to produce a jam or malfunction. As you can see from the chart and images below, the 70PSS liked some ammo better than others. Good article. I think there are better options out there for the same money or a few dollars more. The last one I had I drawerd the 7 Rd mag and packed 5 10rd mags with it. If you had a way to torque it the same every time would likely help. Interesting rifle. Since it has a full synthetic stock, that wasted space should be accessible for extra ammo, the wrench, and additional survival items of choice.

It should also be a waterproof compartment.

Original Papoose is One Great Gun

Hi, Bob. Great point. It would definitely increase the survival rifle angle.Let me explain. The takedown rifle has been around at least since the bicycle rifles of the turn of the 20th century. Hunters valued light-weight rifles that could break down into pieces.

This allowed for ease of transport to and from the destination. Plinkers could ride to the edge of town and pop glass bottles without having a gun strapped over their backs. Boaters, campers, and others saw the appeal in a rifle that could take up little space but come in handy in case of need. In other words—a survival rifle, one that can be used for signaling, dispatching small game for food, perhaps even for self-defense against predators, four-legged and otherwise.

The thoughts and theories of surviving with a rifle have long since been co-opted and spun into products to fit this niche need. Prepping and survival involving firearms is a trendy, mainstream subject today—hence the products to fuel it. While AR and AK type rifles get most of the press, perhaps the most ideal choice for everyday survival in the absence of help is the.

Though any. So I got to asking myself that blanket question, what gun is better? The two most obvious choices are the Henry Survival Rifle and the Marlin Papoose —two well-established rifles by well-established American brands. These are obvious factors when loading out for a weekend adventure but even more important once you found in a prolonged ordeal. So, in the end, the Ruger was off the list and I purchased both the Papoose and the Henry to see which one is better.

Marlin came out with their Model 70 PSS in the s as a take-down magazine-fed version of the firm's legendary Model 60—the most popular 22 rifle made. A Papoose you will find today will come with a fairly standard composite stock with sparse checkering at the pistol grip and on the butt.

Otherwise, the rifle has a matte aluminum receiver and stainless-steel appointments including the bolt, the magazine release, cross-bolt safety, sling studs, and the barrel. The rifle packs disassembled in a soft, foam padded case with one seven-round magazine and a spanner wrench to tighten the barrel nut for assembly. Note: I did not use the spanner wrench for assembly but snug fit the barrel nut finger tight. We have resumed order fulfillment.

Twenty years or so ago, Marlin's advertising liked to state that the company's Model I didn't doubt it for a minute.

The Model 60 was such a clean, simple, hot-damn little rifle that it was difficult to imagine that anything could ever displace it. If you consider the Model 99 of to be the first Model 60 — even though it wasn't called the Model 60 yet — it's easy to believe that for a good, long while, the Marlin Model 60 outsold every other.

And the Marlin. Origins of a Classic The Papoose has its roots in Marlin's Model 99, a tube-fed autoloader that made its debut in The Model 99 was an enormous improvement from its immediate predecessor, the Model The Model 89 featured a machined-steel tubular receiver along the lines of Remington's Modeland it weighed in at a relatively hefty 6 pounds.

Its successor, the Model 99, used a stylishly streamlined alloy receiver to achieve a weigh of just 5 pounds, a reduction of almost 17 percent from the Model And more than that, the Model 99 just looked modern. What more could a child want? In no time, Marlin had blown out the Model 99 clan to include a nearly overwhelming variety of tube- and magazine-fed. These guns had minor cosmetic and functional differences, but they were built on the durn-near-foolproof Model 99 chassis. I've owned a boatload of these little rifles, and they've all been utterly reliable and more accurate than I can hold.

For example, I had a first-year Marlin I could hit golf balls with it regularly at yards when I got the elevation dialed in. That is no exaggeration. InMarlin renamed the Model 99 the Model The magazine-fed version of the tube-fed Model 60 was named the Model Same gun, different feed system.

Strictly speaking, this is the gun Marlin promoted as the best-selling. For the next 19 years, Marlin kept on grinding out the Model 60 to the delight of children and non-children everywhere. Then, ina wonderful thing happened: Somebody at Marlin looked down and noticed that the Model 60's Spartan simplicity lent itself to a takedown design.

Well, why not? Armalite had introduced its AR-7 takedown semiauto. All you'd have to do would be to split the Model 60's breech right at the head of the chamber, thread the receiver, and put some sort of retaining gizmo on the barrel assembly. Voila and bingo! The Model 60P Papoose was on its way.

I suppose the name stems from the fact that you could sling the little Model 60's carrying case over your back and tote it around somewhat in the manner of an American Indian mother carrying her child. Frankly, I'm surprised the PC crowd didn't sue Marlin for using the word in this context. Maybe they did. If so, Marlin stood firm, which gives me just another reason for liking the Model 70P — I mean the Papoose. Favorable Impressions The Papoose made quite a splash when it debuted in Standard equipment includes a 4X scope and padded case, the latter with built-in flotation cells in case the gun falls overboard.

Considering its low price, I expect this little takedown rifle will sell like syrup at a pancake show.

The Takedown Dilemma: Henry, Ruger or Marlin?

Simpson wasn't kidding about the price. Of the three new-in-box Papooses I have owned, none came with a scope. By or so, Marlin was no longer advertising the scope, but if the s-vintage Papooses came with scopes, I got gypped! They make the bright red nylon case buoyant, but be aware that the case's zipper isn't necessarily watertight.Forums Recent Posts New posts. What's new New posts Latest activity.
